Walmer Pupils will move undercover thanks to new Canopy Installation
With 390 pupils, 14 classes and almost 60 staff, the Downs Church of England Primary School in Walmer, Kent has rather a lot of people to take care of.
An important part of everyday school life is moving classes around a school site, quickly, safely and efficiently. Having access from outside a school building can help with this but as we all know this country’s inclement weather can often disrupt even the simplest of plans but thanks to a new purpose-built canopy system from schools specialist Able Canopies this primary school will soon have its pathway cover extended providing all who use the school with even greater protection and ease of movement around the building.
“Not only do our pupils and staff benefit but our waiting parents, at the end of the school day, also appreciate having shelter against extreme weather”

Sally Ballard, the school’s business manager had no hesitation in recommending schools specialists Able Canopies for their most recent project as previous experience of working with them had proved to be so successful. ‘From start to finish we found them to be just fantastic to work with. Not only were their rates very competitive they were also extremely responsive to our needs and sympathetic to the environment of our school,’ Sally explains. ‘We were running holiday clubs at the time of construction, which only took three days but we had great peace of mind knowing that they were so safety aware and that each site worker had been CRB checked as well.’

Modular Build: Coupals Primary, Suffolk
Coupals Primary School in Haverhill, Suffolk has installed a custom designed free standing classroom. The bespoke octagonal building was built in less than ten weeks, with minimal upheaval to the school.

The 182-pupil Coupals Primary School needed the extra accommodation for the increasing numbers of older children at the school where places are expected to rise to 218 as part of the schools organisational review. The new building was conceived as an area where a large number of children could benefit from free space to enjoy music, drama and dance as well as a quiet and peaceful environment to learn. Consequently, the overall design had to be light and airy and ensure adequate provision of acoustic and thermal aesthetic properties.
“I wanted a space for enrichment; one that children of all abilities could use for therapeutic stories, drama, music, assemblies and for teachers to enjoy too.” Says head teacher Charles Hardingham.
The proposed site was right in the middle of the playground and directly in front of the main entrance and exit. It was imperative therefore that construction could take place with as little disruption to the school day as possible and meet obvious health and safety implications. Mr Hardingham also wanted something that reflected a multicultural theme and its provisional sketch resembeled "a nomadic tent with huge cushions".
