Cycle Shelters - The need for secure parking facilities
Did you know that currently only 2% of children cycle to school? The Government are keen to see this percentage drastically increase and The Home Office states on their website that over the next 20 to 30 years, the Government’s aim is to increase cycling and walking by making it more ‘convenient, attractive and realistic’ especially to those at work and school.
According to research carried out by Sustrans Safe Routes for Schools, secure cycle parking is the most effective way to encourage pupils to cycle to school.
The three main benefits of having an Able Canopies Bike Shelters are that they:
provide excellent cover from the weather protecting saddles and lubricated mechanisms
have secure toast racks enabling users to lock both the wheel and frame reducing the risk of theft
encourage people to cycle to school and work, which reduces traffic and promotes fitness
3,000 children aged between 9 and 14 years of age were questioned by Sustrans about cycling to school. This survey showed that 54% of the pupils and 43% of their parents would like to see improved cycle storage facilities at school and that secure cycle storage was the top requirement for children who already cycled or were considering cycling.to school.
At Able Canopies we supply and install a wide range of secure cycle parking facilities enabling people of all ages to securely lock their bikes with confidence. Our parking facilities include:
Why our Cycle Shelters encourage cycling to school and work
Design: At Able Canopies we design, manufacture and install all of our cycle shelters and compounds and work with professional architects to design bike shelters which meet your needs.
Quality: The high quality of our steel cycle shelters and compounds enables us to guarantee them for up to 10 years depending on the type of finish as shown below:
Powder coated bike shelters come with a 5 year guarantee
Galvanised and powder coated shelter comes with a 10 year guarantee.
The type of finish on the steel work is reflected slightly in the price as a galvanised bike shelter offers an extra 5 years on the guarantee so in many ways paying that little bit extra can go a long way in terms of longevity and the environment.
Security: Our range of bikeshelters and compounds offer different types of stands but are all designed so that they allow the wheel and the frame of the bike to be secured in line with recommendations by Sustrans and the Police.
Available Cycle Shelters & parking facilities: The type of cycle parking you purchase will depend on your budget. For schools, you may be eligible for funding via school travel plans.
Able Canopies offer a wide range of cycle racks as these are the most popular type of cycle parking. We offer the Sheffield stand design which is recommended by organisations such as Sustrans. View our range of cycle racks here.
The Bike Box is becoming increasingly popular within town centres, schools and sports centres. Personal possessions such as helmets, pumps and shopping bags can be securely stored along with cycles.
Cycle shelters provide protection from the elements as well as high security as the toast racks are attached to the frame of the shelter and allow users to lock both the frame and the wheel.
Cycle compounds with lockable gates are the most secure shelters available on the market today. These offer excellent security. At a school, the gates can be opened in the morning and then opened again at the end of the day.
Modular: All of Able Canopies bike shelters and compounds are modular in design allowing you to provide as much cycle storage as is necessary. Bike shelters can also be used as waiting shelters and for secure buggy storage so for example one module could be for cycles and the next module could be a seating area.
Planning service: Generally planning permission is not required for bike shelters, but for larger areas it may well be. Able Canopies offer a planning service and can guide you through this process. Please contact us for your free planning guide. Click here to find out more.
Location and Installation: During your free survey, Able Canopies CRB checked surveyors will visit your site and provide you with the best cycle storage solutions which are within your budget and advise you on the best location for it if you are unsure.
Extras: Because we manufacture and design all our cycle shelters we can provide additional extras such as helmet lockers within the shelters. If you would like any additional extras for your cycle shelter please let us know and we can supply a quote for you.

Cycle initiatives
There are a number of schemes which encourage children to cycle to school and one of the best we have seen is BikeIt.
With the government encouraging children to be more eco-friendly, purchasing secure cycle facilities, can help with this as well as encourage you to swap a car trip to walk, cycle or car share
The safety of the roads often puts children off cycling to school. It is important for parents to feel at ease sending their children to school on bikes but if the ground is uneven or has pot holes this can often make parents keener to drive their children to school rather than allowing them to cycle. Encourage children to report these pot holes by entering the information on http://www.fillthathole.org.uk/. Once reported the local council will arrive shortly to fill in the pothole.
