Cycle initiatives
There are a number of schemes which encourage children to cycle to school and one of the best we have seen is
With the government encouraging children to be more eco-friendly, purchasing secure cycle facilities, can help with this as well as encourage you to swap a car trip to walk, cycle or car share
http://www.changeyourworld.org.uk/.
The safety of the roads often puts children off cycling to school. It is important for parents to feel at ease sending their children to school on bikes but if the ground is uneven or has pot holes this can often make parents keener to drive their children to school rather than allowing them to cycle. Encourage children to report these pot holes by entering the information on http://www.fillthathole.org.uk/. Once reported the local council will arrive shortly to fill in the pothole.

Hertfordshire Pupils Pedal Ahead
Cycling to school is fun, affordable, environmentally-friendly and even known to improve children’s performance in lesson time – and now pupils at Newberries Primary School in Radlett have even more reason to get on their bikes... Thanks to the installation of a brand new cycle shelter, pupils of Newberries Primary can enjoy the many benefits of cycling to school, knowing that their bikes and scooters will be kept safe and dry throughout the day.

“52% of our pupils said they would prefer to bike to school”
“There is a real benefit of cycling to health and the environment – and it helps to reduce the traffic around the school,” says head teacher Ms Ness Peters. “We have been working hard with Herts Highways to make getting to school easier and safer for our children with improved road markings, flashing school signs and extended double yellow lines on the corners near school.”
Custom-made and installed by school specialists Able Canopies, The Windermere Cycle Shelter has been designed to provide protection from the elements and allows the children to lock both the wheel and frame of their bike to keep it safe. Able Canopies supply and install a range of cycle shelters, compounds and racks to ensure you find the perfect cycle shelter solution. Most shelters and compounds can be adapted to fit your needs and requirements.
The school was really impressed with the speed and professionalism of Able Canopies from the surveyor who checked the site, to the telephone advice line and and the installers on the three days it took to complete the work,” says Ms Peters.
With a donation of £5,500 from UK charity, Sustrans, combined with £2,000 from the school PTA fund, a total of ten bikes can now be housed in the school’s cycle shelter.
Lizzie Thal-Jantzen, Project Officer at Sustrans adds, “We’re delighted to be able to offer funding to support the building of this new cycle shelter. It’s great that this school is taking measures to make it simpler for students to choose two wheels for the school run.”
"In last year's travel survey, 52% of our pupils said they would prefer to bike to school. Now parents can cycle with their children and they will have somewhere safe to keep their bikes,” explains Ms Peters. “We ask all children who come by bike to sign the school's cycling agreement which asks them to promise to wear a helmet and carry out Bikeability training."

Potton Pre School, Bedfordshire
"The children have settled into our new premises brilliantly and enjoy the extra space and the protection from the elements that is provided by the canopy. The canopy has already made a huge difference to the children and staffs at the pre-school, as the little ones are able to play outside even in the rain and snow. It has already become an integral part of the building and an area that the children enjoy hugely."
Fairway Primary School, Stockport
“Able Canopies Ltd, have undertaken jobs at two of the schools I help maintain for Somerset County Council. One job was at Bowlish Infants School - Shepton Mallet which involved the construction of a new polycarbonate mono-pitched children’s shelter attached to the main building, which was carried out on time and to the quotation cost in a professional manner and to a well constructed standard.
The other job was carried out on my recommendation to the head at Horrington Primary School - Near Wells but under the heads direct management. This was a similar polycarbonate mono-pitched children’s shelter but erected in a difficult location attached to the main building but surrounded on three sides by existing structure. Although I didn’t deal directly with Able Canopies regards this job, I did inspect following construction and again I am happy with the works undertaken from a construction / appearance point of view.
Both heads of these schools have expressed their satisfaction in respect of the customer service and the way the works were undertaken on site as well as the quality of the finished product provided by Able Canopies Ltd.
I look forward to future working opportunities with your company and won’t hesitate to both recommend your services to others and hopefully utilising them again myself.”
David Payne, Area Building Surveyor, Bristol
“I have found the service offered very courteous and supportive and indeed thoughtful when it came to the installation. We are very pleased with our canopy and the way it has fitted into the existing building. The price was competitive and I am sure being local any ongoing support will be there ongoing service”

SustransCycle Shelters FAQ's
How long does it take to install from order?
Once you have decided to order your cycle shelter from Able Canopies, we can discuss with you available installation dates. Available dates very much depend on the time of year but we always endeavour to get your shelter installed as soon as possible. The actual installation usually takes one day (depending on the size of the shelter).
What materials are your shelters made from?
All our shelters are constructed from steel box section and covered by polycarbonate sheeting.
How do I choose the right shelter?
We have designed a range of five shelters to suit every budget. If you are interested in a specific shelter from our range we can provide you with a quote for this. If you are not sure which shelter is best for you, we can give you a price for each option to give you a better choice. We also offer four timber shelters which are made from a choice of western red cedar wood, modified timber or treated softwood.
Do the shelters need to fix to a hard stand?
Yes we can only fix our shelters to a hard stand. You may already have a hard stand which the shelter can possibly be fixed to. If not, we will be happy to quote to do this work for you.
Why do you need to know the location of where I want to install the shelter when I request an estimate?
We always ask for an address as this helps us to price for you more accurately.
Do you offer supply only?
We are unable to provide a supply only service as all our products come with an extensive guarantee. For us to be able to offer this guarantee one of our professional installation teams must install the product for you.
What is your lead time?
As we manufacture our products, our usual lead times are three to six weeks. The school summer holidays are our busiest period but we will always endeavour to get your canopy installed at a time most suitable for you.
Have you installed any shelters in my area?
We have installed thousands of canopies, shelters and shade sails across the UK which can all be viewed in the gallery section on our website.
Do you offer any guarantees?
All our shelters come with a guarantee of between 5 and 10 years. Our galvanised shelters offer ultimate corrosion protection and so cycle shelters which have been galvanised come with a full 10 year guarantee.
How do we maintain our shelter?
To maintain your shelter, we recommend that you periodically clean all steel components and polycarbonate panels with warm water and a non-abrasive cleaner.
Can a shelter be moved after installation?
Yes, the relocation would be charged at an installation only price, but it is possible to move our products to a different location.
Does the price include installation?
Yes. The price we quote you includes installation and removal of rubbish.
What colour can I have my shelter?
All our shelters can be powder coated to any RAL colour. View the RAL colours and finishes.
Will I be harassed by sales people?
We do not employ commission driven sales people so you will not get hounded with telephone calls. What we do promise, is to contact you once we have sent your quote out to ensure you have everything you need.
Will I be getting value for money?
With our shelter systems you always get excellent value for your money. We provide a system which offers quality and longevity at excellent value.
How much disruption will you cause during the installation of the canopy?
You will hardly even know we are there! Most of our products are already assembled to minimise on site disruption to your site on the day of the installation and will always leave the site clean and tidy upon completion.
Are your workforce CRB checked?
Yes our surveyors and fitting teams are all CRB checked.
Why choose an Able Shelter?
We are specialist suppliers who design, manufacture and install our own shelters using our own trained teams of employed fitters so that you get a service that is second to none. Many of our shelters have a unique system which clamps the polycarbonate sheets which reduces the need to drill holes in the panels making them longer lasting and more weather proof.
Does the shelter have any other uses?
The shelters can be used as cycle, waiting and or buggy shelters which can all be used in a variety of applications.
The surface we would like a shelter fixed to is uneven. Can we get round this?
