5 Myths of BIM demystified

small When any new process or way of working begins to take hold in an industry there will always be a fog of myth and misinformation that forms around it. Change brings resistance and with it reasons not to embrace the new world. Many of these arguments will have no basis in truth.

It is like that with BIM, or Building Information Modelling to give it its full name. Even though it really came to prominence 15 years ago there is still much confusion about BIM and recent publicity has only increased that further.

To debunk the myths NBS recently published answers to some of the more common misconceptions. With due recognition to NBS and their content we have highlighted the key points of 5 of them here.

No.1 BIM is just 3D modelling

Creating images in 3D is the most obvious and most visual change that the new way of working has brought to users of BIM. It is however much more than that. It is about the change of mind set that comes with collaborative working and the management of digital assets meaning it is about people, process and technology.

No.2 BIM will take time to implement

New ways of working take time to get used to and to build into existing workflows. There will undoubtedly need to be an investment in time to develop learning and processes. This initial investment will pay dividends in the medium to long term as all projects move to the new way of working. There are training materials available to speed up the process and experts to talk to. The industry has adapted quickly before with the move to CAD. It will no doubt do so again.

No.3 BIM will cost more

There will be some upfront cost to implement BIM but it does not have to be expensive and there are tools and help available, some of which are free. Your own implementation of BIM can be carried out in a way to suit your business, which will help to manage costs. The benefits will give a return in the medium to long term.

No.4 BIM is just for big companies and big projects

It could be argued that smaller companies have the most to gain from the new way of working as it will allow them to benefit from the efficiencies on offer and the potential for collaboration. There is not restriction on the scale or type of project were BIM can be used and therefore be beneficial.

No.5 BIM is just a flash in the pan

Many of the concepts that underpin BIM have been around for many decades. Advances in technology mean what were once just ideas and discussions are now part pf a working process. The demands from global markets also act as a driver for change and efficiency. BIM is here to stay.
