Young Spixworth learners can now explore, experiment and enquire without disruption.

Spixworth Infant School in Spixworth, Norwich, has recently completed the expansion of their facilities with a new all-weather outdoor learning area that can be enjoyed all year round.

The much loved school, which first opened in 1961 and currently has 127 children enrolled, previously had no outdoor weather protection. However, the staff at the school are very passionate about making changes based on what is best for the children, even when budgets are tight. They were aware that children benefit greatly from learning and playing. They wanted to provide a dry and safe area for their pupils that would be of the highest quality possible and would give them the best learning experience.

The canopy which was supplied and installed by Able Canopies Ltd. has far exceeded the staff’s expectations. Heidi Jordan, the School’s Headteacher had this to say: “We are very satisfied with the canopy; the quality is great and the complete structure is exactly as planned for. Our Reception teachers are over the moon. It is allowing them to plan and facilitate a much broader range of outdoor learning experiences every day.”

The children love being outside and now only get wet due to their play and learning choices – not because of the weather. The staff have also received many positive comments from parents recognising that it will enhance their child’s time at school.

Heidi continues: “Our whole school embraces outdoor learning. The Reception children and staff have always tried to be involved in as many outdoor learning experiences as possible, but the weather often, quite literally, stopped play. We wanted a canopy that would extend and enhance our outdoor environment and enable our young learners to explore, experiment and enquire without disruption. The canopy we planned is exactly what we have received. The attention to detail is fantastic, right down to the taps on the water butts that have added an extra dimension to water play!”
