Brief
As part of a wider site upgrade, Next Retail appointed Avanta UK Ltd to improve one of the main entrances at their distribution centre in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The aim was to provide reliable weather protection for staff working outside or waiting to enter the building, while enhancing the appearance of this prominent entrance point.
The existing entrance presented several challenges, including nearby air conditioning units and cabling, which required careful consideration during the design process. The client was also planning to replace the existing single door with a new double door set, meaning the canopy needed to accommodate the updated access arrangement and sit approximately 2.5 m above ground level.
Importantly, the client was looking for a more upmarket entrance solution that would reflect the quality and professionalism of the Next brand, rather than a basic canopy structure.
Solution
Following an initial enquiry, a site survey in early April 2025, and a pre-site meeting in early May 2025, we proposed the Ullswater Apex Entrance Canopy as the most suitable solution. This design offered a more premium appearance than standard entrance canopies while delivering excellent all-weather protection.
The proposed canopy measured 3.3m x 4m and was finished in Basalt Grey (RAL 7012) to complement the building’s exterior. To enhance protection and comfort at the entrance, the design included side-fill panels and a bespoke front fill, ensuring the walkway remained dry and sheltered in all weather conditions.
Clear technical guidance and visual examples from previous projects helped the client confirm the design choice. The order was formally signed on 8th May 2025, allowing the project to proceed in line with the wider refurbishment programme.
