PTA Fundraising Events – The Legal Requirements

human hand filling up insurance formWhen organising a fundraising event, it’s easy to spend your time arranging volunteers and items required that you end up forgetting about the important and legal issues such as insurance. Obviously we all hope that nothing goes wrong on the day and take extra care to ensure there are no accidents. However, insurance still needs to be in place.

Here’s some tips on what you should look into when organising your fundraising event.

1. Public Liability Insurance
Public liability insurance means that if somebody has an accident on your premises which results in damage of property or injury, your association and members will all be covered against any claims made against you.
You may think that if the schools have insurance in place, then this covers the PTA and their events but it doesn’t. PTA groups are not covered by the schools insurance because they are separate organisations and have charitable status they can still be pursued in a court of law.

2. Insurance for Third Parties
You may think that if you have public liability insurance in place that everything’s covered – this isn’t the case. Many PTA Events can involve contracting third parties such as entertainment, bouncy castles etc. It’s important to remember that these companies need to have their own public liability insurance in place. When a third party books to exhibit at your event, ask to see proof of their insurance and keep a copy for your records. There are different levels of insurance that is required; check with your local council for the cover needed at your event to make sure everyone is covered.
