The Brief
Wexham Hospital in Slough, Berkshire required a freestanding entrance canopy installed at the entrance to their A&E department. This canopy would provide cover to those entering and exiting the building, ensuring the internal floors were kept as dry as possible. The hospital staff were also finding that stone chippings were being brought into the building and flicking up into the mechanism of the electronic doors, resulting in the motors burning out and so a solution was also needed to solve this issue.

The Solution
Wexham Hospital - Entrance Canopy Technical Drawing - Able Canopies Ltd.A Welford Dome Entrance Canopy was chosen by the hospital as the preferred canopy design and our design team suggested the addition of polycarbonate side fills to the sides of the canopy, as this would stop people walking across the gravel area adjacent to the path and bringing the stones into the building.

Prior to the canopy installation the hospital had received comments that the entrance was not easy to see. As this was the entrance to the Emergency Department it was important that patients were able to access the building as quickly as possible. To ensure the entrance was seen easily we powder coated the canopy in Signal Red (RAL 3001) for high visibility and signage was added to the canopy to make it clear to all visitors that this was the entrance.

Installation
As the entrance was used for the hospital’s Emergency department, it had to be accessible at all times, even during the canopy installation. We therefore carried out an in-depth risk assessment and method statement to ensure there would be no risks or incidents whilst on-site and we scheduled the installation to be done during the hospital’s predicted “quiet” periods, which were during the night, so as to cause minimal disruption to patients.

Due to the fact that staff and patients still needed to use the entrance at all times, we installed the canopy in sections, digging the foundations and installing each post one at a time, cordoning off each section with safety fencing.

The canopy was installed on schedule and has resolved the issue of stones flicking up and jamming the doors and the entrance is also now highly visible for patients and visitors.
