Carew Academy – Coniston Freestanding Canopies

In September 2024, we supplied and installed two Coniston Freestanding Canopies at Carew Academy in Wallington, Surrey.

As part of the development of its new purpose-built school, Carew Academy worked with Kier Construction to enhance its outdoor provision and ensure pupils and staff could benefit from year-round outdoor learning and recreation. The school required three sheltered areas positioned outside classrooms to create safe, practical, and weather-protected spaces. Kier Construction subsequently appointed Able Canopies to design and deliver a tailored canopy solution that would complement the building and support the school’s long-term vision for flexible, inclusive education.

Following consultation, we installed a large Coniston Freestanding Canopy totaling 149.911 squared metres (three Coniston Canopies back to back,) covering multiple entrances to multiple classrooms, creating a spacious, all-weather outdoor learning area ideal for lessons, group activities, and social interaction. In addition, we supplied and installed a second Coniston Freestanding Canopy in an L-shaped configuration, wrapping around the corner of the building. This design provides sheltered access at the entrance, a covered outdoor learning and play space, and a protected queuing area to help keep visitors safe and students dry. Together, these commercial-grade canopy installations deliver durable, low-maintenance protection while enhancing the overall functionality of the school’s external environment.

For another outside classroom area, we recommended a Grange Junior Freestanding Canopy, creating a bright, sheltered space that extends learning beyond the classroom walls while offering reliable all-weather protection.
