Enhancing the Commuter Experience with Transport Canopies
The UK’s transport network is entering a new phase of reinvestment and strategic renewal. In early June 2025, the government unveiled its biggest-ever funding package for regional transport, announcing £15.6 billion earmarked for local transport projects across city regions aiming to improve buses, trams, and rail links outside London over the next five years (gov.uk). This marks a decisive move towards closing the long-standing gap in infrastructure investment and supporting the wider “Plan for Change.”
For transport bodies, developers, and local authorities, this shift translates into fresh opportunities and higher expectations for commuter-first infrastructure. As stations expand, bus interchanges modernise, and active travel infrastructure grows, external structures like canopies become more than just practical shelters. They’re strategic components of accessibility, branding, and long-term resilience for transport hubs.

The Role of Canopies in the Transport Sector
Transport environments — from small regional rail stops to large multimodal interchanges — must be durable, intuitive, and commuter-friendly. Canopies in these settings support the day-to-day needs of thousands of passengers, offering:
- Weather protection that keeps entrances, platforms, and access routes safe and usable year-round
- Wayfinding clarity, making transit points more accessible for all users, including those with limited mobility
- Cohesive design that complements new-build upgrades or integrates with heritage architecture
For over 20 years, Able Canopies has supplied and installed canopy systems across the commercial transport sector, including airports, train stations, seaports, bus stations, and lorry parks. Our wide range of robust products are ideal for covering entrances, walkways, and waiting areas, with both standard and bespoke options available.
Whether aligning with an architect’s vision or fulfilling a practical brief, we use high-performance materials such as aluminium, steel, engineered polycarbonate systems, and glulam timber, suitable for both curved and mono-pitched designs. Systems like SUNPAL and SUNGLAZE enable architects and developers to achieve wide spans, modern glazing, and thermal insulation, all with lightweight, leak-proof performance and long-term resilience. Public expectations around transport infrastructure are rising; these canopy systems deliver the safety, clarity, and design continuity that help elevate the commuter experience.
As part of a £3 million infrastructure upgrade, Bournemouth University commissioned a new transport hub to enhance connectivity between its Talbot Campus and the wider area. A key requirement of the development was a modern, sustainable shelter for waiting passengers, one that delivered both visual impact and environmental performance.
Able Canopies worked closely with the university and construction partner Mildren to design and install two bespoke Kensington Dual Pitch Solar Canopies, each spanning over 21 metres. The canopies feature integrated solar panels (18 kW system total), robust drainage, LED lighting, and glass windbreaks, all tailored to deliver weather protection, energy efficiency, and a sleek architectural finish.
This project showcases how adaptable canopy systems can support not just passenger comfort but wider sustainability goals in modern transport infrastructure.
Transportation Authorities Choose Able Canopies
We’re proud to support infrastructure improvements through durable, low-maintenance, and sector-appropriate canopy systems. Transport projects require more than a one-size-fits-all approach, they need:
- Specification-ready solutions with CAD drawings, load calculations, and material certifications
- On-site adaptability to accommodate operational transport environments and public use areas
- Products that perform—including roofing systems like Palram’s Sunpal and Sunglaze, which offer UV protection, impact resistance, and long-term clarity
- Experienced installation teams who understand working within live sites and around rail safety standards
Our range of entrance canopies, covered walkways, cycle shelters, and waiting area structures are designed to meet the real demands of the transport sector, now and into the future.
Looking Ahead: Smarter Shelter for Smarter Transport
As the government commits to upgrading regional transport, the supporting structures around these improvements must keep pace. This includes smarter shelter solutions, ones that support sustainable travel, improve accessibility, and make the daily commute more seamless.
At Able Canopies, we’re ready to contribute to that future, providing reliable, attractive, and fully compliant canopy systems that connect people to their next destination.
