Environmental Influence
Because when space is designed with purpose, the impact goes far beyond the structure itself
The impact of external structures on wellbeing and behaviour
The spaces we spend time in have a far greater influence on us than we often realise.
Across different areas — from urban planning to workplace design — there’s a growing understanding that external structures play a key role in shaping wellbeing and behaviour. These environments influence how we interact with others, how we feel within a space, and even our overall sense of belonging.
In schools, this relationship is just as important
The built environment doesn’t just provide a setting for learning, it actively shapes the day-to-day experience of both students and staff. Factors such as space, movement, accessibility, and exposure to outdoor environments all contribute to how students engage, behave, and respond throughout the school day.
External structures, in particular, offer an opportunity to extend and enhance that environment.
Covered outdoor spaces create additional, flexible areas that can be used for both learning and leisure. Whether used as outdoor classrooms, dining areas, or breakout spaces, they allow schools to adapt how space is used without the need for large-scale building works.
Outdoor classrooms, for example, enable lessons to move outside while still providing shelter and structure. This not only increases available teaching space but also allows for better spacing between groups when needed.
These structures can be designed as standalone installations or integrated with existing buildings and can be manufactured using a range of materials, including aluminium, steel, and timber – depending on the intended use of the space and the overall vision.
Beyond functionality, the impact on wellbeing is worth considering
Access to outdoor environments has been linked to improved mood, reduced stress, and more positive social interaction. In a school setting, this can translate into calmer breaktimes, more spacious learning environments, and greater opportunities to create a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Behaviour, in many cases, is a reflection of environment as much as it is of policy.
By creating spaces that support movement, flexibility, and interaction, schools can positively influence how students experience their day, not by changing expectations, but by improving the environment in which those expectations sit.
At Able Canopies, we work closely with schools to design bespoke external structures that align with both practical requirements and the wider goal of supporting better outdoor environments.
Because when space is designed with purpose, the impact goes far beyond the structure itself.
