How to Host a Halloween Fundraiser at Your School
Halloween provides the perfect excuse to bring pupils, parents and the wider school community together, and it can also provide a fun opportunity to raise money for your next school improvement project.
Whether you’re fundraising for new playground equipment, outdoor learning resources, a school canopy or something completely different, here are a few ideas for creating a frighteningly good fundraiser.
Hold a Pumpkin Decorating Competition
Invite families to decorate or carve a pumpkin at home and bring their creations into school for judging.
Charge a small entry fee and create categories such as funniest pumpkin, most creative design and spookiest creation. Remember to consider how carved pumpkins will be safely transported and displayed.
Organise a Halloween Disco
A Halloween disco is a school fundraising classic for good reason.
Sell tickets in advance and encourage pupils to come dressed in their favourite Halloween costumes. Music, games and refreshments can all add to the event, while a fancy dress competition provides another activity for everyone to enjoy.
Run a Spooky Bake Sale
Invite families to donate Halloween-themed cakes, biscuits and treats to sell after school or during a Halloween event.
Spider cupcakes, ghost biscuits and pumpkin-themed bakes can make your stall particularly eye-catching. Just remember to follow your school’s usual food hygiene and allergen procedures.
Create a Halloween Trail
Turn your school grounds into a Halloween adventure by placing clues, characters or activity stations around the site.
Families could purchase a trail sheet and follow the clues to discover a final answer or prize. For younger pupils, keep things fun rather than frightening.
Hold a Halloween Raffle
Ask local businesses and families whether they would be willing to donate suitable prizes and sell raffle tickets in the weeks leading up to Halloween.
This can work particularly well alongside a larger Halloween event, helping you raise additional funds without adding another separate date to the calendar.
Host a Fancy Dress Day
One of the simplest fundraising options is a Halloween-themed non-uniform or fancy dress day in return for a small donation.
You could even award prizes for the most imaginative homemade costume or best use of recycled materials.
Make Your Fundraising Goal Visible
Whatever event you choose, let families know exactly what you’re raising money for.
Having a clear goal can help everyone understand what their donations will contribute towards and give the school community something positive to work towards together.
With a little planning and plenty of imagination, Halloween can become much more than a fun date in the school calendar, it could help bring your next school project one step closer too.
