Reducing Screen Time Through Outdoor Learning
In today’s digital world, screens have become a regular part of everyday life for children of all ages. From interactive whiteboards and tablets in classrooms to smartphones, gaming consoles and televisions at home, many pupils are spending more time indoors and connected to technology than ever before. While technology undoubtedly plays an important role in modern education, schools are increasingly recognising the value of balancing screen-based learning with outdoor experiences that encourage movement, creativity and social interaction.
Outdoor learning provides an excellent opportunity to reduce screen time in a meaningful and engaging way. By taking lessons beyond the classroom walls, schools can create stimulating environments where pupils can develop practical skills, improve concentration and reconnect with the world around them. Whether it’s reading outdoors, conducting science experiments in nature, practising maths through playground activities or simply encouraging imaginative play during break times, outdoor learning allows children to learn through hands-on experiences rather than solely through digital devices.
One of the key benefits of reducing screen time through outdoor learning is the positive impact it can have on pupil wellbeing. Spending time outdoors has been linked to reduced stress, improved mood and better focus, all of which can support learning outcomes within the classroom. Fresh air, natural light and physical activity can help children feel more energised and engaged throughout the school day, while outdoor play also encourages important social skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving.
Outdoor learning can also help improve physical activity levels among pupils. Instead of remaining seated for long periods using screens, children are encouraged to move, explore and interact with their environment. This is particularly important for younger pupils, whose development greatly benefits from active and sensory-based learning experiences. Even simple activities such as storytelling under a canopy, nature scavenger hunts or outdoor art sessions can provide valuable alternatives to screen-based tasks.
Creating dedicated outdoor learning spaces can make it easier for schools to incorporate outdoor activities into the daily timetable throughout the year. Covered areas such as school canopies and shelters allow pupils to benefit from outdoor learning in a comfortable environment, even during less favourable weather conditions. This helps schools maximise the use of their outdoor areas while ensuring learning can continue come rain or shine.
Importantly, reducing screen time does not mean removing technology altogether. Instead, it is about creating a healthy balance between digital learning and real-world experiences. By integrating outdoor learning into the curriculum, schools can provide pupils with a more varied, active and engaging educational experience that supports both academic achievement and overall wellbeing.
As schools continue to prioritise pupil health, engagement and development, outdoor learning is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in helping children disconnect from screens and reconnect with creativity, exploration and active learning.
