Installation Focus: The Unicorn Satellite Centre
Location: The Unicorn Satellite Centre, West Midlands
Product: Colourful Freestanding Canopies: The Coniston & The Grange Junior
Purpose: Outdoor play and learning all year round
Today, we’re focussing on an installation we recently completed in the historic town of Stourbridge in the West Midlands where we installed two colourful canopies
The Unicorn Satellite Centre is a specialist educational provision which is operated by The Brier School under the Ascent Multi Academy Trust. It was officially opened in September 2025 and supports children and young adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities and complex special educational needs and disabilities.
A couple of months after they opened, they contacted us as they were looking to create a couple of covered outdoor areas within their grounds to provide dry, sheltered areas where the children can play and learn in all weathers.
After carrying out a site survey and meeting the centre’s staff, understanding their requirements, both practical and taking into considering their desired appearance, we settled on two products.
The first product is the Grange Junior Freestanding Canopy which appealed to them due to the roof panels options; the structure can be covered with coloured polycarbonate roof panels which creates a stunning, vibrant canopy, perfect for educational settings. This is exactly what the centre was looking for.
The second product is the Coniston Freestanding Canopy which again, was perfect because although the Coniston is only available with clear or opal polycarbonate roof panels, similar to the Grange Junior, we can finish the frame, posts and roof bars in any RAL colour of your choice, including multiple different colours, which is exactly what they chose.
The Unicorn Satellite Centre is a purpose-built, safe, structured, and nurturing space that features specialist equipment and a bespoke curriculum focused on building life skills, independence, and community collaboration. Their new canopies only add to their facilities, provide a safe, dry and sheltered outdoor area that protects from all-weather including the sun’s UV rays and the rain. This expands the use of their outdoor area throughout the year and the enjoyment the children can gain from it.
