The Brief

Bishop Milner Catholic College is a large school in Dudley, West Midlands that caters for children from the ages of 11-18 years.

They contacted us in October 2012 and requested prices for a large free-standing canopy. They were in the process of applying for a grant to cover the costs and needed some prices to enable them to apply for the correct amount required.

The Solution
A site survey was arranged and it was agreed that a Hamilton Big Span Canopy would be the perfect canopy structure for the college.

                                                                                                         Above: Proposed Canopy

The school required a canopy to be 11.4m x 10.6m to fit in the space in between their buildings. The Hamilton was the perfect solution because it can span large widths with an unlimited length making it ideal for covering the large area that Bishop Milner Catholic College required

Also, the contemporary lattice design appealed to the staff along with the fact that they could have the steel frame powder coated the same colour as their current window and door frames (Slate Grey – RAL 7016).

During the design process, it was established that the standard Hamilton design would cause one of the canopy posts to obstruct a doorway so we had to amend the design slightly to solve this issue. We worked with our structural engineers to offset the posts whilst still making sure the design was structurally safe.

Installation
The installation was booked for March 2013 over 6 days, from 9th – 15th (excluding the Sunday). The installation went smoothly and the canopy was installed on time.

The new design with the posts offset works perfectly within the area and does not obstruct any doorways or windows.

When the canopy was installed, the customer asked for a quotation to have an infill fitted to one end of the newly installed canopy to create additional protection from the weather.

The infill was added to the canopy in June 2013 as agreed with the college, finishing the canopy off nicely.

When we asked David Haywood, the school’s Site Manager what he thought of our service, installation and product, he rated all three as “Excellent”. He also said that he would recommend us.
