The Brief
Wates Construction contacted us in October 2017 as they were tendering for the £7.8m development at Murray Park Community School in Mickleover, Derby. The project which was supported by SCAPE and funded by the ESFA, comprised of a brand-new building with a new reception area, 15 additional classrooms and office space.

When Wates first contacted us, they requested estimates for a number of Tarnhow timber canopies which are constructed from Glulam timber to provide shade and shelter around the new building. However, after being appointed the project by Derby City Council to carry out the works which were designed by Lungfish Architects, the canopies had been removed from the project to save on costs.

Once the project was in full swing, it became apparent that a number of canopies would fit into their budget after all and came back to us for some up-to-date estimates. We have a very good working relationship with Wates Construction and were therefore very hopeful that we would secure the project. We had recently worked with them at four other projects including Westbury School, Bluecoat Primary School, Poplars Farm Primary School and The Beacons Children’s Home.

After talking to the contractor, we were informed that a competitor was specified for the project however, all parties preferred Able Canopies on a basis of operational and previous experience which is a great testament to us.

The Solution
We were invited to attend a design meeting in February 2019 to discuss a shade and shelter solution that would work well with the area and match the design whilst also being cost effective and of the highest quality. From the meeting, it was agreed by all that the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy would be the perfect shade and shelter solution and the Langdale Cycle Shelters were the perfect product to provide the cycle coverage required.

An order was subsequently placed for four Coniston Wall Mounted Canopies, one of which would be fitted with a DDA compliant handrail, they also ordered three Langdale Cycle Shelters. The canopies were to be finished in Anthracite Grey – RAL 7016 and the steel Langdale Shelters would be galvanised.

The Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy is our most popular structure, it is well loved within the education sector and we have installed thousands across the UK. Last year alone (2018), we installed a total of length of 1,142 metres of this versatile, stylish and long-lasting system.

The Langdale Cycle Shelter has an understated, yet elegant design that works well in any environment and provides secure cycle storage with the addition of our Sheffield Cycle Racks.

The Installation
The installation went ahead in two phases; the first phase saw the installation of three of the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopies and the second phase saw the installation of the fourth Coniston Wall mounted Canopy and the Langdale Cycle Shelters.

In order to ensure the handrail was DDA compliant, we installed it 1100mm from the floor.

Our installation was completed in June 2019 and the entire project will be completed in September 2019, ready for the start of the new academic year.

The expansion will completely modernise school facilities whilst allowing the school to increase their pupil capacity to from 1,100 to 1,650 across years 7 to 11. The work was carried out to provide additional places due to the number of new housing developments being built in the area.

Here’s what the Site Manager from Wates Construction had to say about Able Canopies’ participation in the project:

“Able Canopies provided brilliant services from design through to installation. The canopies look fantastic and the team were a pleasure to work with.”
