Brief
In December 2022, St Andrew’s C of E Primary School in Crawley, West Sussex, reached out to us in search of a modern canopy solution to enhance their courtyard. Their goal was to replace an existing canopy (not installed by us) with a durable, all-weather structure that would provide reliable shelter for students and staff during break times, as well as create a dedicated outdoor learning space.
With outdoor learning widely recognised for its numerous benefits to child development, the school wanted a high-quality, long-lasting canopy that would encourage more time spent outdoors without compromising comfort or productivity. We were delighted to offer a tailored solution that met their specific needs.
As a school that caters to 204 pupils aged 4-11, St Andrew’s C of E Primary School is committed to “striving for the highest standards” in everything they do. To ensure minimal disruption to students, they requested that the installation take place during the school holidays—a request we were more than happy to accommodate.
Proposal
Initially, the school planned for a Coniston Walkway Canopy extending from the hall covering two full sides of the building in Brown (RAL 8014). However, during the second survey, our surveyor proposed an alternative solution that would offer greater coverage and functionality.
A Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy with valleys, connecting four canopies to effectively cover the entire perimeter of the courtyard. The school was impressed with this concept and requested a quote.
We prepared and submitted a proposal that included the removal of their existing canopy (not installed by us) and its replacement with a bespoke Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy featuring with valley. The design consisted of an 18m x 3m canopy, leading into a 16m x 3m, into 19m x3m and a 16m x 3m finished in Moss Green (RAL 6005).
Installation
In July 2023, St Andrew’s C of E Primary School placed an order for their Coniston Wall-Mounted Canopies with Valleys. As requested by the school, we scheduled, we scheduled the installation for August 2023, during the school summer holidays.
We also worked in conjunction with Nomow Ltd., a leading provider in the artificial grass industry since 2001. They were commissioned to supply and install artificial grass and rubber mulch surfacing as part of the school’s courtyard renovation project. The goal was to create a space that was not only more accessible but also visually appealing, ensuring a welcoming and functional environment for both students and staff to enjoy during lessons and break times.
With the installation now complete, the school benefits from a versatile, all-weather outdoor space that can be used for a variety of activities throughout the year. Both students and staff can now enjoy a sheltered environment, protected from the elements, making outdoor learning, play, and socialising more accessible.
The canopy solution provides an abundance of sheltered space while maintaining a compact and cost-effective design, making it an ideal choice for the school’s needs. By maximising coverage without compromising space, the new installation will ensure students and staff can enjoy outdoor areas in all weather conditions.
The school was delighted with the final result, and the pupils and staff were able to start using their new outdoor play and learning area as soon as they returned in September. We are proud to have contributed to enhancing their school environment!
